Etsy funds on hold: payment reserves and tracking
If Etsy places a payment account reserve on your shop, part of each new sale of a physical item is held and is not available for deposit within the standard processing time. Here is what Etsy’s help page and Etsy Payments Policy say, read on October 19, 2026. Etsy decides on its own, so no outside tool can tell you why your reserve exists.

01How a reserve works
Etsy shows the holding time and the percentage of the reserve in your Payment account, and they can vary from shop to shop. Funds from a sale are released when you add tracking and Etsy can verify that it shows the order in transit, or when the default holding period has passed. Digital items are not held in reserve. Released funds become available at 6 pm Eastern Time.
Everyday charges such as refunds, fees, Etsy shipping labels and Etsy Ads keep coming out of your current balance while a reserve is on. In your Orders list, an Order in reserve badge shows the sales concerned, and your monthly statement CSV has an availability date.
02Why Etsy places one
Etsy lists, among its risk factors, your first sale, a sudden sharp rise in orders or refunds, orders that consistently lack tracking, and orders that are not shipped on time. Etsy Payments Policy adds that Etsy can look at how long your orders take, how often buyers open disputes, whether tracking information is available, the estimated delivery times, and the shipping status of your open orders.
The policy gives an illustration of a reserve of 30% held for a rolling 45 days. It is only an example. Your own numbers are in your Payment account.
03How to release funds sooner
Add valid tracking. If Etsy can confirm the order has shipped, the reserved funds are released right away. Etsy warns that it cannot always confirm tracking for some carriers. In that case the funds are held for the full period displayed in your Payment account.
04How to avoid one
- Ship within your processing times, or adjust the times if they are too short.
- Do not mark items as shipped before the carrier has them.
- Answer customer messages quickly, within 24 hours if you can.
- Follow the Seller Policy. Etsy adds that if you are already a Star Seller, a reserve will not be placed.
05What this means when a supplier ships
Etsy lists tracking availability and estimated delivery times among the signs it looks at. When a supplier ships, the tracking number exists only once the supplier has sent it, so the quicker it gets onto Etsy, the sooner Etsy can verify it. Sereane posts the number on the right sale as soon as the supplier gives it, with the carrier’s name. The carrier is the supplier’s choice, and neither you nor Sereane can make Etsy able to verify it.
