Etsy tracking number not working: causes and what to do

01What the buyer sees

• Shipped: you completed the order on Etsy.
• Pre-transit: a tracking number was added and the shipping facility has not scanned the package yet.
• In transit: the package is on its way.
• Delivered: the package arrived.

If the order shows Not shipped, Etsy says the seller may not have completed it on Etsy or may not have shipped it yet.

02Etsy tracking not updating: why an international parcel goes quiet

Etsy says some international or cross-border shipments stop showing tracking once they leave the country of departure, and that the status should update when the package reaches the destination country. A parcel that crosses borders can look stuck for days without being lost.

03Etsy USPS tracking number not working

A USPS number that shows nothing is often a parcel that has not been scanned yet: Etsy then shows Pre-transit. Etsy says that for USPS labels bought on Etsy, letters and flats excepted, the buyer is notified only after the carrier scans the package.

Common sense, not an Etsy rule: look the number up on the USPS website too. If USPS knows it, wait for the next scan before you replace anything.

04No tracking info, or no Track Package button

Etsy shows a Track Package button for carriers it supports directly. For a carrier Etsy does not support, the number is still there: the buyer finds it by opening the receipt from the Purchases page. And if the order has no number at all, Etsy reminds buyers that not all shipping methods include tracking, and tells them to contact the seller.

05Check the number itself

Common sense, not an Etsy rule: compare the number on the order with the one at your supplier, character by character. A missing digit or a number from another parcel looks exactly like a broken tracking.

06Replacing a number

If you added the number manually, Etsy lets you change the number or the carrier for 3 days: see how to update a tracking number on Etsy. Later, you can add another package to a completed order, and the new number appears next to the old one, or send the right number to the buyer by message.

07Why it matters beyond the customer

Etsy says that when a seller adds tracking that Etsy can confirm is in transit, funds held in a payment reserve are released. It also says that Etsy cannot always confirm tracking for some carriers, and then the funds stay in reserve for the full period. Valid tracking is also required for Purchase Protection and for Star Seller.
