Etsy SEO: how to get your listings found
Your listings are live, but shoppers don't find them? Etsy SEO decides which listings show up in Etsy search, and in what order. Here is how Etsy describes its search in its Seller Handbook (updated August 2025, read on October 29, 2026), and what you can change today.
01Etsy search works in two steps
First, query matching: Etsy gathers the listings whose words match what the shopper typed. Then, ranking: Etsy orders those listings. A listing without the right words never enters the results, however good it looks.
To match a search, Etsy reads your title, tags, categories, attributes, description, first photo and reviews.
02Titles: short and clear, not a list of keywords
Etsy recommends short, clear titles that lead with what the item is, since that is what shoppers see first, especially on a phone. Where a phrase sits in the title does not affect ranking. A long string of keywords separated by bars can confuse shoppers.
03The 13 tags
- Use all 13 tags: each one is another chance to match a search.
- Use multi-word phrases of up to 20 characters. “Custom bracelet” is stronger than “custom” and “bracelet” on their own.
- Don't repeat tags, and don't repeat your categories or attributes: Etsy already counts them as tags.
- Skip deliberate misspellings and tags in several languages. Write in your shop language; Etsy translates.
- Don't worry about plurals: Etsy matches root words, so “diaries” finds “diary”.
- Prefer specific, “long tail” phrases (“canvas tote bag”) to broad ones (“tote bag”): fewer people search them, but they tend to buy.
04Descriptions count too
Etsy search reads your description. Put your key words in the first sentences, in a sentence or two that sounds human. Don't copy the title word for word or paste a list of keywords.
05Categories and attributes
Pick the most specific subcategory. Add every attribute that is accurate (color, material, occasion), even the broader ones. Each acts like an extra tag without using one of your 13.
06What moves a listing up
- Relevancy: words that exactly match the search.
- Listing quality: several good photos and a return policy.
- Shop quality: for example a shop icon.
- Customer service over the past three months: average review rating, message response rate and case rate.
- Engagement: a listing that shoppers view and then buy moves up.
- Recency: a new listing gets a small boost for a few hours to a few days. Etsy says renewing listings just for that boost is not an effective strategy.
Etsy also says that Etsy Plus, Star Seller and Etsy Ads do not change where your listings appear in regular search results.
07Don't judge by your own searches
Etsy personalizes results for each shopper, so searching for your own listings does not tell you where others see them. Check your shop stats instead: which listings get traffic from Etsy search, and which search terms bring shoppers in.
08Why am I not getting sales on Etsy?
There is rarely a single cause. Repeated tags, a title that doesn't say what the item is, empty attributes, a description that misses the words shoppers use: each gap means the listing matches fewer searches. Price, photos and reviews then decide whether a visit becomes a sale.
09A free Etsy SEO audit of your listings
Checking all this by hand, listing by listing, takes hours. The free Etsy SEO audit from Sereane reads the listings file you download from Etsy and gives your shop an SEO score out of 100, with what holds each listing back. Nothing to install, and no Sereane account needed.
10In short
Etsy finds your listings through their words: title, 13 tags, description, categories and attributes. It then ranks them by quality, customer service and engagement. Start with your tags and titles, then check your whole shop with the free SEO audit.
Example: made-up figures and items.
