Refunding an Etsy order you already bought from a supplier

01How to issue the refund on Etsy

1. On Etsy.com, open Shop Manager, then Orders.
2. Open the menu next to the order and choose Refund.
3. Choose a reason and add an optional message to the buyer.
4. Tick Issue a full refund, or enter the amount for a partial refund.
5. Select Review refund, then Submit.

Etsy says to cancel the order too if needed: a refund does not cancel it.

02Who pays and which fees come back

With Etsy Payments, the refund comes out of your Payment account. If there is not enough money in it, your card on file is charged for the rest. Etsy automatically refunds your transaction and processing fees on the refunded part, and your listing fees are credited if you also canceled the transaction.

03Things you do not control

• Etsy may offer the buyer a refund as Etsy credit or to the original payment method. As a seller, you cannot choose or change it.
• If you use Etsy Payments, you can refund after the payment is processed and until 180 days afterward. After that, you cannot refund through Etsy Payments.
• If the buyer has filed a chargeback, the order is not refundable from your side and the buyer works it out with their bank.

04Check the supplier before you refund

Etsy’s refund and your supplier’s refund are two separate things. Before refunding, check whether the supplier order has left, is delivered, or was never paid, so that you do not refund a customer whose parcel is on its way, or forget to cancel an order that is still open.
